Dragon Ball (Japanese: ドラゴンボール, Hepburn: Doragon Bōru) is a Japanese media franchise created by Akira Toriyama in 1984. The initial manga, written and illustrated by Toriyama, was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1984 to 1995, with the 519 individual chapters collected into 42 tankōbon volumes by its publisher Shueisha. Dragon Ball was initially inspired by the classic Chinese tale Journey to the West from the sixteenth century, along with elements from Hong Kong martial arts flicks. The series recounts the martial arts training exploits of the protagonist Son Goku from childhood to adulthood. He spends his infancy far from society until he encounters Bulma, who convinces him to accompany her in searching the world for the seven orbs known as the Dragon Balls, which when collected summon a wish-granting dragon. Along his trip, Goku finds a number of new allies, starts a family, learns about his extraterrestrial ancestry, and faces a vast array of adversaries, many of whom are also after the Dragon Balls.
